Inspired by Giants: The Origin and Mission of Canopy East

Starting your own business takes determination and inspiration, often needing to draw on very personal emotions to get it going… and even then, it may not be the success you always wanted it to be.

Google surged to become a global multi-disciplinary force - so much more than Search.

Following 22 years as an investment adviser, I found myself limited in the services I was able to offer. Hamstrung by red tape, compliance, and a corporate structure focused on a single discipline in a family’s wealth, I saw it as a job only half-done. My clients were often in need of guidance beyond investments and someone to take the lead in coordinating all aspects of their financial well-being.

In 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed ‘BackRub’, the original name for Google. As a search engine, it became commonplace, and eventually, the term ‘to google’ became part of the modern vernacular. But Google became so much more. Ads piggy-backed onto Search, then the Android operating system was installed on Pixel phones, all stored in the Google cloud computing service. For Google, the search function is only a small part of delivering what their customers needed.

Drawing inspiration from the origins of businesses such as Google, I embarked on my own entrepreneurial journey to create Canopy East. The mission is simple yet profound: to be the trusted advocate and go-to resource for wealthy families, addressing all their wealth-oriented issues with dedication and expertise.

The name Canopy East holds deep significance. "Canopy" was chosen to symbolise the protective and nurturing role we play, much like the tree canopy in a forest that shelters and supports all life beneath it. "East" represents the direction of the rising sun, a metaphor for the new opportunities and beginnings we help our clients discover and seize. Adding a personal touch to our brand, the logo was designed by my daughter, a talented visual communications student. Her creativity and vision have given Canopy East a unique and meaningful identity that resonates with our values and mission.
